Since the second half of the 1800’s, there have been a number of Forges in South Hylton. A number of them changed names and/or owners. Possibly the three most well known of these were T. S. Forster, Reay & Usher and Bagnall’s. Today, none of them exist. The last industry to leave the village was that of Harry Marsh, structural engineers who left in 2005. They had occupied the site of T. S. Forster.
Two of the items of work carried out at these forges were 12,000 lb bomb casings and 23 ton rudder frames.
